Books and the written word are the primary record of what humans think and what they think about what they do.
From the first records scratched on stone tablets to the Gutenburg revolution to today’s desktop publishing and the Internet, people have always found it important to record and document their activities via language and the written word.
Utilising the Books as physical objects, I created a structure by tying the books into bundles to be labelled and used as building blocks for a Tower.
The Tower itself presents an interesting paradox, simultaneously tempting the viewer to interrogate the often familiar titles - inviting interaction - while actively precluding this activity, beyond the hints on the tags the books remain a concealed and contained collection awaiting rediscovery. The tags also provided a voice and a locus of dialogue, with the Tower perhaps an embodiment of the Halewood community’s dedication to their library.
